Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625) was an Italian Renaissance painter born in Cremona. She received a well-rounded education that included the fine arts and her apprenticeship with local painters set a precedent for women to be accepted as students of art. Although she was one of the most famous female painters (if not the most famous) of the Italian Renaissance, she is somewhat obscure in today’s history of art.
Self Portrait, 1556. Oil on canvass. 22 x 26in; 66 x 57 cm. Private collection.
